About Doll Therapy

Doll therapy is not for everyone, but for some it can increase contentment, reduce anxiety and stress and reduce wandering behaviours in people with dementia.

There are various theories as to why doll therapy works. Some believe it brings back memories of parenthood abd being useful and needed. For some residents, doll therapy is a nurturing action which can give them a sense of meaning and purpose. it can change the emphasis from receiving care to becoming a care giver.

Doll therapy is not only for women, men can also find comfort with a baby doll, toy cat/dog or teddy. It can help to calm stress and ptrovide a companion who they can talk to and love.

Although it can be difficult for relatives to watch their loved ones cuddle a baby doll, perceptions can change once they can see how happiness and contentment. People with dementia who cuddle baby dolls can interact with staff, discussing the baby doll's clothes, remembering lullabies and recalling nursery rhymes.

Therefore there are benefits with communication, companionship and routines.

Not for everyone

Doll therapy is not for everyone however, Comfort Dolls for Dementia would liek to donate dolls to those who may benefit. Many older people do not have relatives to buy these dolls and care homes are often stretched in resources.

Points to remember
  • Do not call the doll a doll. To the person it is a baby.

  • Always provide a blanket to swaddle the baby doll or a crib

  • Do not purchase a doll that cries/ interacts as this can be confusing

  • Do not force a doll on a senior.

  • Place the doll in a chair and allow the person to approach and hold the doll in their own time, if they choose to do so.

  • Communicate the purpose of the doll to anyone who may be providing care
